At Lawley School English is taught through a variety of different contexts and work is linked, wherever possible to other curriculum areas to give context to learning.
In Key Stage 1, children are encouraged to speak confidently and to listen to what others have to say. They are taught to read and write independently and with enthusiasm. In Literacy lessons children are taught a variety of skills: including word recognition, grammar, spelling, joined handwriting skills and writing composition skills. They have a daily “Letters and Sounds” session that focuses on the way words are phonetically broken down and how parts of words can be segmented and blended for reading and spelling.
In Key Stage 2, children build on the skills taught in Key Stage 1 and are given further opportunities for speaking and listening in a wider range of situations and for different purposes. In writing, they are taught to plan and draft pieces with more awareness of audience and with growing accuracy. A greater range of text types are explored and for different purposes. Grammar, punctuation and spelling skills are taught within lessons either discretely or within the context or the written piece. Reading continues to be taught through guided and individual sessions and children have opportunities to read widely and for different purposes. It is our aim that children read easily, fluently and with good understanding and that they develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information. Comprehension skills develop through pupils' experience of high-quality discussion with the teacher, as well as from discussing a range of stories, poems and non-fiction. All pupils are encouraged to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction to develop their knowledge of themselves and the world in which they live, to establish an appreciation and love of reading, and to gain knowledge across the curriculum.
Teaching Early Reading and Writing - Your child will be taught Letters and Sounds. This is a high quality phonics programme which will teach your child how the alphabet works for reading and spelling by fostering their speaking and listening skills and developing their knowledge of how to apply the sounds they learn to their writing and to decode words for their reading. There are 6 phases of Letters and Sounds which your child is expected to achieve by the end of Year 2
