What is Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium was introduced by the Department for Education (DfE) in 2011, as additional funding for pupils who receive Free School Meals and who are Looked After Children. This is because the DfE have recognised that good education is the key to improving young people’s life chances. The Pupil Premium, using additional resources from outside the School’s Budget, is intended to address the current inequalities by ensuring that funding reaches the pupils who need it most. The Pupil Premium has also been introduced for children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces. This service premium is designed to address the emotional and social well-being of these pupils.
Purpose
•The Government believes that the Pupil Premium funding, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current inequalities, by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.
•The Pupil Premium will be allocated to schools for most pupils and will be clearly identifiable. It will be for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.
•Whilst schools will be free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit, they will be held accountable for how they have used the additional funding to support deprived pupils. New measures are included in the performance tables which capture the achievement of those deprived pupils covered by the Pupil Premium.
•There is also information and evidence about interventions which can improve the progress and attainment of pupils available for schools. (Sutton Trust research)
We encourage all parents and carers to ensure that staff at our School know whether their child is entitled to Free School Meals or has a parent who is a member of the armed services.
