Lawley Primary School

"Planting the seeds, growing the future"

Year 2 is an exciting year, as the children are now the eldest in Key Stage 1. With this in mind, there are high expectations for independence and personal responsibility. Year 2 children are expected to set a good example for all and are considered to be important role models, particularly for the younger children in Reception and Year 1. It is also the first year we introduce our I Pad scheme at Lawley Primary School, where children use 1-to-1 devices in lessons to support their learning. Every lesson is uploaded onto our online platform, Showbie, and the children work on their I Pads as well as in their books during the day. All of these lessons can then be accessed at home, as well as their online reading diary to aid home/school communication.

Morning routines:

Children will continue to come into class on their own, through the entrance at the side of the school via Glendale , with their belongings. They will place these inside their lockers. Named water bottles and I Pads must be taken into class.

After storing their belongings appropriately, children should enter the classroom, get their pencil case (provided by school) and sit down to tackle their Early Morning Activity (EMA). These activities vary each morning but are intended to allow the children to warm up their brains for the day ahead in a quiet, focused manner.

Home/School communication:

Every morning, there will be a member of staff at the school gate to welcome the children in, and they will always be happy to receive information regarding your child’s wellbeing that morning, or a change of person collecting at home-time, etc. However, if you need to pass on confidential information or require a longer conversation, please email your child’s class teacher directly, or ask the School Office to arrange an appointment.

Our email addresses are:

Mrs Kedihan: Emily.kedihan@taw.org.uk

Mr Griffiths: sean.griffiths2@taw.org.uk

Mrs Swindell: fiona.swindell@taw.org.uk

PE days:

Both Year 2 classes have PE on Tuesday and Wednesday. We ask that children come into school in their fully labelled PE kit on these days.

PE kits should consist of: black shorts, blue Lawley Primary PE T-shirt, warm jogging bottoms, warm sweatshirt/hoodie, trainers and a spare pair of socks.

Pupils will also require ear tape if they are wearing ear studs to school.

Homework:

Year 2 children will be given weekly homework, which is recorded on Showbie, our online learning platform. The homework is set for the children on Fridays and they will be expected to upload their homework to the labelled folder by the following Wednesday.

We expect all children to develop a love of reading in Year 2 and this cannot happen if reading takes place in school alone. Therefore, it is our expectation that children read with an adult or/and an older sibling at least three times a week at home and upload a comment to their reading diary.. To reward children for an excellent reading, children earn house points for reading at home.

We have a large collection of books to choose from. Once your child has read their book and an adult has commented on their online reading diary, the children can change their books independently on a Tuesday or a Thursday. We also allocate a selection of e-books, of the colour your child is currently reading, via Bug Club for them to share with you. Your child has their own login and password to access their online library. Please record the reading of these e-books on Showbie on your child’s reading diary, as you would the paper books they read.

We would like to thank you for any support you give your child at home. It is very much appreciated.

End of the day routines:

The day ends at 3pm for Year 2 children.

All children will leave via the Key Stage 1 playground gate.

Please note that, due to our rigorous safeguarding procedures, we can only send children home with their parent/s or carer/s. However, we do understand that at times you will need to arrange for someone different to collect your child from school. If this is the case, please inform the member of staff on the gate in the morning or contact the school office to let them know.
