At Lawley Primary reading is formally assessed at regular intervals in a range of ways.
In EYFS and Key Stage One, each pupil has an individual Phonic Passport which tracks their progress throughout phases 1 to 6 of Letters and Sounds. In addition to this in Year 2, some pupils who are reading above their year group expectations will also complete the L'explore reading assessment to support their placement on the reading scheme.
In Key Stage Two, all pupils at the beginning of Year 3 are assessed using the L'explore reading assessment which secures their place on the reading scheme and this is then carefully monitored and tracked by teachers throughout KS2. All KS2 pupils also complete termly Headstart comprehension papers. At the end of Year 6, pupils will complete the statutory reading SATs paper. Pupils who are working below their year group expectations at Key Stage Two have phonics interventions (via the Phonics Hub) to address the learning needs still evident in their Phonic Passports.
The L'explore assessment technology uses artificial intelligence and eye-tracking technology to assess children and place them on specific, appropriate interventions provided by L'explore as well as placement on the reading scheme.
Alongside these formal assessments, out teachers are continually assessing reading through individual and group sessions to facilitate appropriate and timely progression through the reading scheme.
