Lawley Primary School

"Planting the seeds, growing the future"

Love of Writing

At Lawley Primary school, we recognise the importance of English. By the end of Year 6, we intend our children to have developed a love of writing and to be able to express their thoughts and ideas clearly and creatively through the written word.

We believe that literacy and communication are key life skills. Through the English curriculum, we help children develop the skills and knowledge that enable them to communicate effectively and creatively through spoken and written language and equip them with the skills to become lifelong learners. Literacy is at the heart of all pupils’ learning and is central to pupils’ intellectual, emotional and social development. It has an essential role across the curriculum that helps pupils’ learning to be coherent and progressive.

Spoken Language

Pupils at Lawley Primary School are taught, through a range of engaging techniques such as drama, role play and the inclusion of contextual learning, to be able to:

  • Communicate effectively, speaking with increasing confidence, clarity and fluency.
  • Participate in discussions and debate in a variety of contexts.
  • Listen to the views, opinions and ideas of others with increased interest.
  • Articulate ideas and thoughts clearly with appropriate tone and vocabulary recognising audience.
  • Respond to questions and opinions appropriately.
  • Retell stories and poems which are known by heart.
  • Ask questions with increasing relevance and insight.

Pupils have a variety of opportunities for drama, role play and the performing arts. Opportunities include Christmas productions, year group performances and assemblies.

At our school we enjoy participating with well know authors and illustrators as well as our own engaging projects.

Recent events have included a visit from Damien Harvey, author of 'The Thought Snatcher' in Year 4 where the children took part in a writing workshop alongside him. Year 3 were also visited virtually by Nick Sharratt where pupils took part in some illustration work.

September 2023 - Year 5 and 6 are taking part in two Waterstones virtual author visits by SF Said and Maz Evans. SF Said will present his award-winning novel TYGER, which is illustrated by Dave McKean and will discuss the new book, explore where his ideas came from, and how he created his beautiful and compelling story. Maz Evans is the author of the bestselling 'Who let the Gods out?' and will be presenting and discussing her new book 'Oh Maya Gods!'
