"Planting the seeds, growing the future"

Children’s Safeguarding Team (CST)

We have identified and selected a group of young people from Year 5 and Year 6 who will be instrumental in leading on safety within the school, from a child’s point of view. This can range from assessing safe areas in school, ensuring other children feel safe in school and know who to talk to about their worries. They take their role seriously and follow the rules of our school and are good role models. Also, they help the children in our school make good choices about keeping themselves safe.

What is the vision?

For all children within the school to feel safe and be able to approach someone if they have a concern.

All children have a right to be safe, but also have a responsibility to risk assess the decisions they make and the consequences of their decisions.

To prepare children for life in modern Britain and be able to keep themselves safe from harm.

For all children in school to be aware of our lanyard system and who the DSL’s are in school

What is the philosophy?

A peer selected group to represent the school context.

Children from Year 6 will be responsible for recruiting children from Year 5, following an application process. Children can apply detailing their interest in being involved and express their maturity of handling a sensitive subject.

With support from Miss Wolf and Mrs Robinson, applicants are selected and then will be mentored by existing Year 6 members team during the new half term.

Who will lead? How will other staff be involved?

Mrs Robinson (Pupil and Family Support Officer) and Miss I Wolf (RHE Co-Ordinator)

How will children be selected? Which groups will be represented?

A selection of 6-8 children from year 6 will be selected on interest in being involved and maturity of handling a sensitive subject. They will be recruited in the Summer term through an application and interview by the current CST, who will then train the new team during the second half term.

Previous achievements of the CST

  • Pupils expressed their concerns regarding road safety outside school at busy school times. As a result we now have a pedestrian crossing. Please view the video below to see their success.
  • Assisted a pupil who had worries from home by directing them to a DSL and as a result things improved greatly for the child
  • Presented at the local Children’s safeguarding board termly meeting to share good practice with other schools.
  • Delivering important messages to their peers,  via assemblies on subjects such as NSPCC Pants Campaign, Antibullying Week and Children’s Mental Health Week.
  • Delivered the importance of staying safe in the sun both at home and in school. Children competed the expected criteria and were awarded the Certificate of Accreditation, as a Sun Safe School.

November 2023

The Children’s Safeguarding Team delivered assemblies for Antibullying Week to EYFS, kS1 and KS2. They focussed on how bullying can affect people and that we all need to work together to make a difference.

January 2024

Yearly overview

This is our long-term plan for the school year 2023-2024. These are things we would like to achieve to help support our own development as a team and also support our peers.

Autumn 1:

Becoming familiar with roles and responsibilities as a safeguarding team and begin our role by being present and seen on the playground during break and lunchtimes.

Begin to follow the daily rota for break and lunch times.

Autumn 2:

To promote anti-bullying week and hold an assembly to our peers about this.

Distribute application forms to year 5 pupils to begin the recruitment process

Spring 1:

Review application forms and make a team decision, with the adult overviewing on recruiting new members.

Design posters to promote children's mental health week and talk to peers during their break and lunch times about supporting mental health.

Safer internet day - the team to share concerns  and issues that they have identified with the computing lead, who then will address these via the curriculum.

Spring 2:

PCSO visit to learn more about radicalisation and exploitation and share these messages with peers.

Social conversation lanyards - these are to be shared with CST and used by them to promote meaningful conversation about real life scenarios whilst on their duties.

Summer 1:

Safety walk with health and safety officer and Gov around school to identify safe and unsafe areas - from this CST will produce a plan of action to address concerns.

Sun safe assembly to promote the importance of staying safe in the sun.

Shadowing Mrs Robinson in delivering drop in sessions with their peers. From this, CST will learn strategies for self help for children to regulate their own emotions.

Summer 2:

NSPCC PANTs assemblies to be delivered to KS1 and KS2 with adult support.

Positive interactions training with early year lead to promote the CST interactions with younger children within school and be able to support them better.

Spring Term 2023

This term we started by looking at the Speak Out, Stay Safe campaign by the NSPCC and delivered an assembly on this to the KS1 children.

We looked at mental health and promoted Children’s Mental Health Week by creating an online assembly to share with KS2 children.

We have had a meeting with PC Dave Worrall to complete some basic training with us on spotting signs on radicalisation and exploitation, as well as sharing some messages with us on the importance of our role.

Summer term:

This term, the safeguarding team have learnt all about protected characteristics, what these are and how we can promote them in school. The Year 5’s (soon to be Year 6’s) will help to put together a whole school display to promote these next year.

We also have worked hard on getting our Sun Safe Schools award, here are our team delivering a fabulous assembly to the school and the award we have achieved.

We also have been conducting some pupil voice with our peers to find out if things have been in place over the year have made us feel safer and happier at break times.

A huge well done to Year 6 Safeguarding Team who will be leaving us to go on a new adventure to Secondary School and our great Year 5’s who will continue their role in September, beginning by recruiting new members.
